"For a long time I kept up with the environmental devastation being reported in the media and generally felt really hopeless," says D:Fuse. "Then it occurred to me, changing even small actions on a daily basis could make a massive difference when compounded to a large amount of people. The best part is- going green doesn't necessarily cost anything. In a lot of ways you can actually save money"
D:FUSE WILL BE FOCUSING HIS EARTH:66 AGENDA IN FOUR SPECIFIC AREAS:
1) Get out of your car and get on your bicycle.
Whether you ditch your car completely or just commit to using your bike one day a week instead of your car, it’s more than doable. Outfitting a bike you already own to be street-ready and practical for errands is easier than you think. It's a hell of a lot more fun than sitting in traffic, you get a workout in, it saves a load of money on gas, and it's zero emission!
"I used to think my mountain bike was simply for recreation. Then I was without a car for over two months in Los Angeles. I outfitted my mountain bike with road tires and began running errands on it. I rode everywhere- from the studio to the bank and even grocery shopping. I was amazed with how much more I enjoyed it than sitting in my car in traffic. You are zipping around cars, maneuvering through traffic lights. You generally never have to stop. Quite often you can get there faster than in car. It's a hell of a lot more fun and you get a workout in at the same time. I live further-out near the beach now, it's at least a 30 minute car ride to the studio. I ride my bike and make it there in just over 35 minutes, and I'm energized and calm when I get there rather than frustrated with sitting at traffic lights. Practically the only time I get in my car now is jumping in a cab for the airport. I have 5 friends who know about my “bicycle switch” and now they run errands on their bikes at least one day a week. Imagine if everyone who read this on the website or myspace page did the same. That’s saves a ton of oil and greenhouse gases!
2) Drastically reduce or eliminate bottled water.
By some accounts, the amount of energy required to make the plastic bottle and transport it for sale could fill the bottle 1/3 with oil. That's a lot of energy, too much energy for something that’s right there in your faucet. Water filters are a great way to make tap water toxin free and great tasting.
"This sounds so obvious but I was oblivious to this fact until just a couple of months ago. I'm constantly traveling and I drink at least a gallon of water a day. I was probably buying 30 bottles of water a week. That's a lot of wasted energy and as it turns out- a significant amount of money. I carry a Brita filter with me on the road now. I can't avoid the fact that I have to buy bottled water at the airport because of security measures, but everywhere else I just filter it from the tap. It's actually a lot more convenient than constantly searching for the vending machine and also searching for where to recycle it. There are loads of hotels and airports that still don’t have recycling.
3) Stop flushing the toilet.
No need to worry about spending big money to buy a low-flow toilet. Just flush your toilet less! The average toilet uses 3.5gallons of water every flush.
"If there's a piece of tissue in the toilet, leave it there for the next flush. If it's yellow- let it mellow! Whatever you want to call it- just focus on flushing at least 1 or 2 times fewer than you normally would every day. Multiply that out to just the people in your surrounding neighborhood and the amount of water and energy saved processing that water isa substantial amount."
4) Reduce or eliminate eating meat.
It takes 4000 gallons of water to grow a pound of meat. It takes only 25 gallons of water to grow a pound of wheat. A meat based society is a huge drain on resources in terms of water, forest clear-cutting for cattle grazing, and the thousands of tons of untreated sewage that ends up in our rivers and streams.
"I decided drastically lower my meat consumption over 8 years ago. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I can honestly say that I'm in the best shape of my life. I'll be the first to tell you that I'm not a strict vegetarian. I never eat beef or pork but I'll eat free-range organic chicken once every three weeks or so and I eat fish about the same amount. It's important to keep your protein in check so I'm always eating black and red beans, garbanzo beans, eggs, and soy on occasion. Cutting down or eliminating meat is not only good for the environment; think of all the disease, hormones, and steroids from American-processed meat that you are no longer putting in your body! It's easier than you think. There are so many great vegetarian options out there that are delicious."
