EARTH:66 - THE WHOLE STORY

Earth:66 is narrowing it's search to to partner with a Green organization that addresses earth-related issues in a number of ways including green building, climate change, energy, water, and recycling initiatives. Earth:66 will partner with this organization to raise money for them and bring awareness to their cause. If you are an organization that would like to be considered don't hesitate to email us at the bottom of the page. We hope to make our pick very soon and will keep you updated on this.

Along the way on myspace and at earth66ride.com D:Fuse will be educating people on simple things they can do every day that add up to make a big difference. The idea is that doing your part to reduce your carbon footprint is a lot easier than most people think.

"For a long time I kept up with the environmental devastation being reported in the media and generally felt really hopeless," says D:Fuse. "Then it occurred to me, changing even small actions on a daily basis could make a massive difference when compounded to a large amount of people. The best part is- going green doesn't necessarily cost anything. In a lot of ways you can actually save money"

D:FUSE WILL BE FOCUSING HIS EARTH:66 AGENDA IN FOUR SPECIFIC AREAS:

1) Get out of your car and get on your bicycle.

Whether you ditch your car completely or just commit to using your bike one day a week instead of your car, it’s more than doable. Outfitting a bike you already own to be street-ready and practical for errands is easier than you think. It's a hell of a lot more fun than sitting in traffic, you get a workout in, it saves a load of money on gas, and it's zero emission!

"I used to think my mountain bike was simply for recreation. Then I was without a car for over two months in Los Angeles. I outfitted my mountain bike with road tires and began running errands on it. I rode everywhere- from the studio to the bank and even grocery shopping. I was amazed with how much more I enjoyed it than sitting in my car in traffic. You are zipping around cars, maneuvering through traffic lights. You generally never have to stop. Quite often you can get there faster than in car. It's a hell of a lot more fun and you get a workout in at the same time. I live further-out near the beach now, it's at least a 30 minute car ride to the studio. I ride my bike and make it there in just over 35 minutes, and I'm energized and calm when I get there rather than frustrated with sitting at traffic lights. Practically the only time I get in my car now is jumping in a cab for the airport. I have 5 friends who know about my “bicycle switch” and now they run errands on their bikes at least one day a week. Imagine if everyone who read this on the website or myspace page did the same. That’s saves a ton of oil and greenhouse gases!

2) Drastically reduce or eliminate bottled water.

By some accounts, the amount of energy required to make the plastic bottle and transport it for sale could fill the bottle 1/3 with oil. That's a lot of energy, too much energy for something that’s right there in your faucet. Water filters are a great way to make tap water toxin free and great tasting.

"This sounds so obvious but I was oblivious to this fact until just a couple of months ago. I'm constantly traveling and I drink at least a gallon of water a day. I was probably buying 30 bottles of water a week. That's a lot of wasted energy and as it turns out- a significant amount of money. I carry a Brita filter with me on the road now. I can't avoid the fact that I have to buy bottled water at the airport because of security measures, but everywhere else I just filter it from the tap. It's actually a lot more convenient than constantly searching for the vending machine and also searching for where to recycle it. There are loads of hotels and airports that still don’t have recycling.

3) Stop flushing the toilet.

No need to worry about spending big money to buy a low-flow toilet. Just flush your toilet less! The average toilet uses 3.5gallons of water every flush.

"If there's a piece of tissue in the toilet, leave it there for the next flush. If it's yellow- let it mellow! Whatever you want to call it- just focus on flushing at least 1 or 2 times fewer than you normally would every day. Multiply that out to just the people in your surrounding neighborhood and the amount of water and energy saved processing that water isa substantial amount."

4) Reduce or eliminate eating meat.

It takes 4000 gallons of water to grow a pound of meat. It takes only 25 gallons of water to grow a pound of wheat. A meat based society is a huge drain on resources in terms of water, forest clear-cutting for cattle grazing, and the thousands of tons of untreated sewage that ends up in our rivers and streams.

"I decided drastically lower my meat consumption over 8 years ago. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I can honestly say that I'm in the best shape of my life. I'll be the first to tell you that I'm not a strict vegetarian. I never eat beef or pork but I'll eat free-range organic chicken once every three weeks or so and I eat fish about the same amount. It's important to keep your protein in check so I'm always eating black and red beans, garbanzo beans, eggs, and soy on occasion. Cutting down or eliminating meat is not only good for the environment; think of all the disease, hormones, and steroids from American-processed meat that you are no longer putting in your body! It's easier than you think. There are so many great vegetarian options out there that are delicious."

_________________________________________________________________________

There will be comedy added into the Earth:66 equation to encourage people to log-on and to entertain.  D:Fuse is a vegetarian (as he likes to refer to it- a “recovering carnivore”) trying to survive in the BBQ dominated belt of Route 66. Colorful and vibey diners and authentic rural-America people will provide clever  and funny interaction.
As D:Fuse is a DJ and avid fan of electronic club music (house music) - he will be holding several “Impromptu Dance Sessions” during flat tire repairs, equipment repairs, water breaks, or wherever the inclination strikes with his Earth:66 cohorts Jimmy Hoffmann, Scott Card and whoever happens to be around. He will be doing his best to convert rural America to house music- performing on his mobile DJ rig to gas station attendants, hotel clerks, restaurant patrons, and doing his best to set up gigs at dive bars, hotel parking lots, and clubs along the way.

Along the route, D:Fuse will be pulling from his daily journey to bring in environmental topics from the road. He will also be giving viewers easy ways that they can act to help our planet. From his hotel room he will be talking about the toilets- do they have to use 3.5 gallons of water every time you flush them? Absolutely not- low/zero flow toilets are in fact a daily reality- or better yet- how about the old adage “if it’s yellow let it mellow” to save water? It’s great to see hotels offering “green” initiatives in not washing certain linens every day- but if they really want to be “green” why don’t they offer recycling bins in each room? We take for granted that water simply flows from the faucet, but what is the reality of safe & plentiful water in an ever-polluted world? Are hydrogen-powered cars a step in the right direction or is does it take too much energy to isolate the hydrogen atom and create the infrastructure to make them make sense environmentally?
As D:Fuse is sitting down to lunch at a roadside diner unable to find any organic (and very few vegetarian foods) he will discuss the importance of sustainable crop growing and the impact a meat dominated society is having on our environment. As he is looking at the “fish and chips” platter he will direct people to articles about fish populations rapidly depleting from our oceans.

Much more to come!
